Ubuntu Worldwide (as in Hardy & Cola ;-)

After using Ubuntu in my computer at home since hoary came out (and updating all the way to gutsy) I decided to give the new LTS a fresh install and leave the upgrading till the next LTS comes in 2010. really, I'm sick and tired of irritating my girlfriend about streaming, java, flash, network manager and other stuff "not working propertly" and giving myself a needless day of work to fix the whole thing.

So I went on and took a backup with a neat tool and formatted the thing and installed Hardy after giving Indiana a test drive in my computer, which is, by the way, doingwell these days.

Now I'm back in Hardy and setting up everything after the backup. I like Hardy a lot! Until now I really appreciate the responsiveness generally in the system, the gnome-system-monitor, the new permissions enforcement in admin apps under gnome and the totally painless install of 3d drivers and other apps. Hardy is rocking really hard!

And after drinking a refreshing and tasty Cola after dinner I just had to make it part of this post.

It seems that some people in Africa have gotten together to produce sugar as the raw product for production of a new fair trade Cola which guarantees some more cash to the farmers involved; the contact person seems to be local and have direct contact with the farmers in Malawi and Zambia. Here in Oslo it's available in many places and, well, I had to give it a try!

I read something about Ubuntu Trading in the box of Ubuntu Cola and as the website was not up for the world to see I got the cache to look at (thanks to google). I found out that it is not related to Ubuntu (as in GNU/Linux) at all but, in a way, it maybe related to the Ubuntu philosophy, judge yourself. Ffor better or worse, it does definitely run on ubuntu.

All in all a good brand, in my opinion the marketing is somehow misleading, but still a good initiative which all Ubuntu related "products" (as in "I am because we are") can drive synergies forward from.

Back to the future: Web 2.0

Back in '97 I used to work with web design. I did all sort of things in Flash, html, css, javascript and it lasted until the year 2000.

I have really missed making things for the web, this I realized when taking a course last semester in Hypermedia and doing a semester work:

For that project I went back to Dreamweaver under wine, but after trying it for a couple of days I just didn't feel at home anymore; so I went on and used gedit, nano or any other available text editing tool I could grab and was happy with it. The game has really changed since my experience in the late '90s: SVN repository for changes in the project, XHTML 1.0 Strict compatibility for all content, PHP and databases, XML like HTML based files for content, CSS for layout and design purposes are all expected standards today.

All in all the project turned out real nice, but most of all showed the power of FLOSS today in practice!

I started working fulltime at Captive last year as a tech consultant and marketing responsible. My main goal is to get the company to focus on products which are directly correlated with the other stuff we do (Networking, Security, Servers & Desktops) and develope new ones that we can sell them as part of our offerings.

So this semester, as I am taking a course in entrepeneurship here at the University of Oslo, I decided to work on a project to see if one of these new developed products could be delivering web 2.0 sites (interactive web sites, where sharing and collaboration are standards) to our customers. The main idea is to use web developers and designers from South America and use the best from FLOSS software regarding CMS and Wiki systems as our standardized base.

I got an interview in the student newspaper at Uni because of this work... Now it's time to get it done. A few minor details remain to be cleared up in this regard but I'm confident we will be ready for the start in October this year...

Quién escribe Linux?

Las cosas en contexto!

Ubuntu será la mejor distribución del planeta ;) pero no es seguro que sea la mejor por mérito de contribuciones al kernel. Cuanto contribuye realmente Canonical y otros desarrolladores de Ubuntu a Linux (si, el kernel) y cuanto contribuyen otros? Cuanto código contribuye la FSF que tanto advoca el software libre? Cuanto contribuye el so-llamado movimiento de código abierto (inglés y español)? Cuál es la posición de Ubuntu y su comunidad en relación a estos movimientos (inglés y español mal traducido pero completo o cortito en ubuntu-es)?

Lean el artículo acerca del kernel (traducción en español aqui gracias a Google ;) que esta corto para que se den una idea de quién hace qué en el núcleo.

Para hacer una larga historia corta, estos son los contribuidores más grandes:

1) Red Hat, 11.2 percent
2) Novell, 8.9 percent
3) IBM, 8.3 percent
4) Intel, 4.1 percent
5) LF, 3.5 percent
6) SGI, 2.0 percent
7) MIPS Technology, 1.6 percent
8) Oracle, 1.3 percent
9) MontaVista, 1.2 percent
10) Linutronix, 1.0 percent.

Hay que tomar en cuenta que contribuidores que no vienen de empresas o de los que no se sabe mayor cosa suman un 26,8% de las contribuciones al kernel (13,9% y 12,9 respectivamente)

Y solo para dejar en claro las cosas: Yo creo que debemos usar el término software libre y la dirección guía de Ubuntu como proyecto de software debe ser ir siempre hacia donde Gobuntu va: una distribución donde no existe ninguna forma de software privativo.

Este proceso toma tiempo, paciencia y MUCHISIMO trabajo! Este entendimiento no es una mera opinión sacada del aire, sino lo que me ha enseñado la experiencia de usar GNU/Linux durante 10 años en mi escritorio (si, yo hace 10 años hablaba de la viabilidad de Linux en el escritorio y lo he visto siempre como alternativa en el escritorio, no como software de servidor con posibilidad de tener interfaz gráfica) y puedo decir que hemos caminado un largo trecho ya, pero aún hay un camino, todavía más largo, por andar.

Me gusta para Ubuntu como comunidad utilizar la apertura y el respeto como base de cooperación y desarrollo. Ser incluyentes y saber dar espacio a otros: a veces no estarémos de acuerdo en como llegar a ellos, pero nuestros objetivos pueden si ser los mismos. En espíritu de igualdad y fraternidad avanzamos cada día.

KDE 4 - WOW!

Personalmente no he usado KDE desde Fedora Core 1. En estos 5 años GNOME ha hecho mi vida muy simple, pero viendo esto tengo que admitir que Kubuntu 8.04 es algo que voy a probar.

Actividades - Dia del Documento Libre

Yo desgraciadamente no he tenido oportunidad de hacer gran cosa el dia de ayer, pero hice esto:

1. Instale NeoOffice y GoogleDocs bar en la mac de mi madre
2. Use solo formato odf en la U (Gracias RedHat 5, OOO y GoogleDocs)
3. He instruido a mis companeros en el trabajo, universidad y grupos de trabajo voluntario de los que soy parte a que usen formatos libres en sus documentos y de ser posible tambien aplicaciones libres para los mismos

Y tu que hiciste ayer?

Aunque la pregunta mas importante es: Que haremos juntos hasta el proxiim 26 de marzo para respaldar el uso de documentos libres?

Yo no creo que esta campana se deba solamente al voto por OOXML manana. Uds. que creen?

El Día de la Libertad de los Documentos (DFD, Document Freedom Day) es un día internacional para la Liberación de los Documentos con acciones de base para la promoción de los Formatos de Documento Libres y Estándares Abiertos en general. El DFD fue iniciado y es apoyado por un grupo de organizaciones y compañías, incluyendo, pero no limitando a, la Free Software Foundation Europa, ODF Alliance, OpenForum Europa, IBM, Red Hat y Sun Microsystems, Inc.

El 26 de Marzo del 2008, el Día de la Libertad de los Documentos proveerá un punto de movilización internacional por la Liberación de Documentos y por Estándares Abiertos. Le dará literalmente a los equipos en todo el mundo la oportunidad de "levantar la bandera": La comunidad de software libre del Ecuador [*] ha tomado iniciativa temprano y se que se han recibido ya algunos de los llamados "Paquete de Iniciación DFD" conteniendo una bandera, camisetas, folletos y estampas.

Tomate de arbol y Nokia N810

Tomate de árbol, Cyphomandra betacea o tamarillo es una fruta muy buena que se da, entre otros lugares, en el Nor-Oeste de América del Sur: Colombia y Ecuador...

La semana pasada conseguimos unos especímenes de esta fruta en Oslo. Importados desde Colombia. Mi uso favorito de esta fruta:

1. Jugo de Tomate de árbol

2. Ají (lo cuál es en si otro post.. típico del Ecuador)

Un amigo mio que trabaja en Nokia me ha prestado su N810 para "probar"... Juguete nuevo!! Así que lo voy a estar probando esta semana... Y ya vendrás otros comentarios... Stay Tuned:

Noticias de Ubuntu Ecuador - 15.01.2008

Muchísimas cosas están pasando con Ubuntu ultimamente...

Esta demás anunciar que ya salío el Alpha 3 de Ubuntu Hardy Heron y está de maravilla... Además de que KDE 4.0 ya salío y esta disponible para ubuntu, kubuntu y otros derivados a través de PPA de Launchpad, para los que quieren probarlo sin instalarlo esta disponible el live-cd.

Mañana 16 de enero es Hug Day (día de los abrazos) donde se cazarán errores en Ubuntu. Si quieres sumarte a esta noble causa entra a #ubuntu-bugs @ irc.freenode.net o buscalos solo aquí!

Palichis dará una charla en Loja en las primeras jornadas de SL en la UTLP. Ve la noticia aquí.

Aparte de todo eso quiero aprovechar la ocasión para informarles que el FLISOL 2008 se acerca a pasos agigantados y tenemos que ponernos pilas ya para poder contribuir con ellos. SI alguién quiere dar una charla acerca de Ubuntu o de SL en general pues unanse al esfuerzo ya!

Y pues seguimos creando el espacio de Ubuntu Ecuador. Usen los foros y el canal en IRC para preguntas a la comunidad.

Ya salío el alpha 2 de Hardy

Lastimosamente no hay todavía una traducción al español. Si alguiéjn quiere suamrse a este esfuerzo visiten: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuMagazine/TranslateFullCircle y empiecen con el trabajo de la traducción (se necesita Scribus). Contacten también a xander21c en ubuntu-peru y haganle saber que están trabajando en el tema para coordinar. Envien también un correo a ubuntu-doc-spa@lists.ubuntu.com pues es mejor coordinarlo una vez con varias personas que doblar el mismo esfuerzo.

Las Noticias Semanales de Ubuntu en español son también uno de los esfuerzos que deberíamos concretizar para el 2008.

Entrenamiento certificado en el escritorio: Ubuntu

Mark Shuttleworth (Fundador de Canonical y el proyecto Ubuntu) anuncio ayer la disponibilidad de un curso en el escritorio Ubuntu. Este material esta bajo CC_BY_NC_SA (es difundible, pero no comercializable) y tiene como objetivo servir a la comunidad.

Se lo puede obtener desde launchpad (con bazaar 1.0 - paquete bzr en ubuntu) en docbook o en PDF desde el ubuntuwiki.

Deseo a todos y cada uno de los miembros y usuarios de la comunidad unas felices fiestas. Si no son cristianos (como yo) pues que tengan un tiempoo agradable con familia, amigos y demás!

Que el 2008 sea un año grande para nuestra comunidad ubuntera!

Planeta Ubuntu Ecuador

El software libre en Ecuador es una realidad. Y eso lo demuestra la comunidad ferviente de usuarios que se adhieren a nuestro proyecto.

Espero que esta sea una ventana al mundo de los ubunteros en Ecuador y ayude a difundir el software libre en Ecuador y el mundo!

Booting from a CD-ROM with no BIOS boot support - Smart Boot Manager from a floppy/harddisk

Well... My old IBM ThinkPad 760LD is a wonderfuil machine, but has no CD-ROM boot support. That can be fixed!

With the Ubuntu live (and install :-) CD you will find a small file called sbm.bin.

use this command on the terminal (under linux) to copy the image to a floppy:

type:

cd /media/cdromdrive/install

where /media/cdromdrive is the mount point of your CD-ROM drive

and then type:

cp ./sbm.bin ~/smb.bin

Now swap your CD drive with your floppy drive. Go to your home directory by typing:

cd ~

and make a floppy image with SBM (this may require a reboot) by typing:

dd if=sbm.bin of=/dev/fd0

Of course this will erase anything you have on your floppy.

Now swap your CD drive with your floppy drive and start the IBM and right after the boot you will see the Smart Boot Manager Interface. Choose to install SBM in the Harddisk drive and then shutdown.

Now replace your floppuy drive with your CD-ROM drive again and the Smart Boot Manager starts again, but now from your Harddisk!!

Make the utility rescan the boot devices and then you will see the CD-ROM drive listed.

Choose to boot from it and voila... The install starts! :-)

You should, of course, use the alternate CD for the install :-)

Ubuntu in the enterprise... Everyday use on "real" business life

My company is in a "Best Practice" process at the moment.

In the meetings the retail managers have we discuss and go through all of the aspects of running our stores and try to get the "best practices" in the different categories we go thorugh (sales, economy management, HR management among others).

I for one use ubuntu in my laptop. No dual boot, just pure ubuntu (now development version "Feisty Fawn" been released in April 19th 2007.

When we write thing down and sintesise our thoughts we use our laptops and rotate in who is writing. We use each others files (MS Word/Excel format) and work on.

But today people started realizing I use another OS when making my presentation to the whole forum. And obviously started asking questions (Yes, I had Desktop Effects activated ;).

So I decided to write down the experience of using my computer among this Windows crowd and what I can and can't do:

Can Dos

* Use the Citrix Metaframe with SSL security based enviroment (witch makes use of certificates and even installed Portable Open Office - www.portableapps.com - to see files Office files and make PDFs inside of the enviroment :)
* See all documents I need for my everyday work (MS Excel/Word/PowerPoint, PDF)
* Have access to a ActiveX based web site using Internet Explorer 6 ( Huge thanks to IEs4Linux -www.ies4linux.org :)
* Listen to my music and see movies while working (Thanks to Rhythmbox/Banshee & Totem/VLC/Mplayer)
* Print without hassle and any driver CD/download install (Set up the net printers and go - Thanks to Gnome & CUPS :)
* Access our Ubuntu 6.06.1 server through SSH/SAMBA when needed
* Connect wiressly through WLAN /LAN / GPRS-over-Bluetooth-with-Nokia-Phone / PCMCIA-3G-GPRS-GSM

Can't Dos

* Seems my IE6 trick isn't working anymore :(
* See advanced (read macrobased) Excel files

All in all I can do pretty much everything I need to do.
